In Italy, less than 5% of streets are dedicated to women – and most of them reference religious or mythological figures rather than real changemakers. ‘nDonnamo? was born to challenge this imbalance. Through interactive urban routes, the project celebrates women’s contributions to society and raises awareness on how urban design and history are never neutral. Each route includes alternative street plates with the names and stories of inspiring women, as well as QR codes linking to additional resources and audio content on our website.
After launching the first route on Women in STEM, in 2024 we inaugurated our second thematic path dedicated to Women in Sport, involving students and residents of the Roma 70 neighborhood. The initiative was presented on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, in collaboration with local schools.
This year, the project has gained recognition with two major awards – the Rome Smart City Lab prize from the Municipality of Rome and the Most Impactful Project award at Shape Europe & Eurasia 2025. Furthermore, our third route, Women for Peace has been submitted and successfully awarded funding through the “Artes et Iubilaeum” call (PNRR).Thanks to these achievements, we have secured nearly €8,000 in funding to expand our impact.
Next steps include completing the new Women for Peace route, leveraging PNRR resources to enhance the existing itineraries, and bringing ‘nDonnamo? into schools to inspire younger generations. The project’s biggest challenge ahead is to communicate effectively and engage a wider audience, ensuring that these alternative narratives reach as many people as possible.
