Social Entrepreneurs: from Latin America to Davos
26 Social Entrepreneurs from around the globe will be full participants and represent the “voice from the ground” at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters.
From Latin America:
Marta Arango – CINDE –Colombia
CINDE promotes the creation of healthy physical and psychological environments for the development of children and youth living in vulnerable conditions in Colombia and Latin America. Its community support networks have been adapted in 27 countries, positively affecting more than 10 million families.
Anne Hastings – Fonkoze -Haiti
Fonkoze is Haiti‟s largest microfinance institution with 43 branches located across the entire country. As a full-service MFI, it provides savings, loans, remittance services and insurance to its clients, as well as business and health training. Fonkoze seeks to empower rural Haitians to build and diversify their income, learn new skills, and follow a "staircase out of poverty" model. Currently, Fonkoze serves more than 45,000 women borrowers and 210,000 savers.
Helio Mattar – Akatú – Brazil
The Akatu Institute for Conscious Consumption works to raise the awareness of citizens about their role in maintaining a more sustainable planet through consumer choice. People are encouraged to change their consumption habits to: value corporations that are more socially responsible; choose products and services that are more sustainable; and use and discard products or services in a more sustainable way. This is achieved through communications and educational activities targetting community/opinion leaders, young people in schools and universities, and employees of partner companies.
Ariel Zylbersztejn – Cinepop – Mexico
Cinepop not only provides free access to family films for low-income families in Mexico, but also uses movies as a way to reach out to these communities. Cinepop links businesses and government to work together to improve housing, education, health and microcredit access for urban and rural populations. Using enormous inflatable screens, CINEPOP sets up its theatre in the middle of town plazas. Before each film is featured, Cinepop provides a platform for socially-oriented businesses and government initiatives to make their services known to the audience.
