Mining the deep seabed will harm biodiversity. We need to talk about it
The fledgling industry could become part of the ocean economy. But deep seabed mining will cause irreversible biodiversity loss.
Dr Aline Jaeckel is a Research Fellow at Macquarie Law School in Sydney. Her work focuses on the regulation of deep seabed mineral mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction. She is the author of the book ‘The International Seabed Authority and the Precautionary Principle’ as well as articles and book chapters in the fields of law of the sea, international law, and international environmental law. Previously, she worked for the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam, Germany. She holds a PhD in international law from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
