U. Rashid Sumaila

Professor and Director, Fisheries Economics Research Unit, UBC Fisheries Centre

Rashid Sumaila is a University Killam Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia. His Ph.D. (Economics) is from University of Bergen and B.Sc. (Quantity Surveying) is from Ahmadu Bello University. Clarivate has named him a “highly cited researcher” since 2021. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2023 Tyler Prize in Environmental Achievement; and the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize. Sumaila was named one of the “100 Most Influential Africans” in 2023.
