Climate change is making Earth’s days longer, say scientists

The consequences of global warming are slowing the speed of Earth’s rotation as the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melt water collects near the equator. This makes the Earth more oblate - or ‘fatter’ and causes it to spin more slowly. Earth’s days have been getting longer over time anyway as ‘friction’ from the Moon’s gravitational pull slows down the rotation.
