These community gardens in Rio de Janeiro are bringing kids closer to nature and fresh food

They teach children how plants grow while challenging food insecurity at the same time. Brazil’s favelas - neighbourhoods of informal housing - have doubled in size since the 1980s and today, 31% of Brazil’s population faces food insecurity. Anything grown in the Nossa Horta gardens is shared with the local community. But their purpose reaches far beyond producing food. They’re a safe neighbourhood spot to chat and keep cool, a space where the kids can play and a chance to get back in touch with nature.
