Connection matters: Africa's unique digital transformations

This video is part of: Centre for Health and Healthcare

‘Only 32% of our health epicentres were connected.’ That’s the challenge @Dr Jean Kaseya faced as Director-General of the Africa CDC. With mobile-phone penetration now surpassing 80% across much of #Africa, a historic transformation in #DigitalHealth is underway. When Dr Kaseya began his career, he was the sole medical doctor for 250,000 people. Today, he envisions a future where AI and digital tools empower every health worker with real-time, connected decision support, linking village clinics to national systems and accelerating early detection. By 2030, every rural community health worker will be connected to the telehealth system, linking villages to health centres, ministries and continental dashboards in real time. ‘In five years, Africa will be another continent,’ he says. ‘We live on the power of #AI and digital transformation.’ But that transformation must be built on solid ground: infrastructure, connectivity, and cross-border data governance.
