Mindahi Crescencio Bastida Muñoz is an Earth activist from the Otomi-Toltec Peoples of Mexico. He convenes the Earth Elders, a gathering aiming to bring together 52 Indigenous spiritual leaders. They carry 5 ‘mandates’ from the Earth, Bastida says. These include the special authority of Indigenous peoples on matters of the Earth, commitment to the defence of life and a pledge to protect ‘sacred sites’, such as Australia’s Uluru.
