90% of fungi species are yet to be discovered

Identifying these unknown species is an urgent priority, scientists say because they could contain compounds that benefit both people and the environment. But the scale of biodiversity loss around the world makes this a race against time. Scientists have so far identified 155,000 species of fungi. But the true number of species could be as high as 2.5 million, according to a new report by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.
