The Mayan calendar reflects this circularity. As one calendar ends, a fresh period of transition begins. The answers lie all around us, says Xiye Bastida as the Mayans understood hundreds of years ago. "One of the first things my mom ever taught me was a little drawing about the economic system. She said, You know, this is it. It just goes up and wants to keep going up. And it's linear and wants to be exponential. But that is not how the Earth works. The Earth works circularly, in cycles.’"
