Inner Sydney has ‘virtually’ ended HIV transmission

Parts of central Sydney used to be the heart of Australia’s AIDS epidemic. But new infections have fallen by 88% since 2010, say researchers. Last year, there were just 11 new cases. The change is thanks to a programme of regular testing, prompt treatment of those with HIV and pre-exposure drugs (PrEP) that reduce transmission by 99%. Experts said the results have been ‘extraordinary’.
