What Japan can teach the world about coping with earthquakes

On 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Noto peninsula. It killed 245 people, damaged more than 76,114 homes and caused up to $17.6 billion worth of damage. Amid these tragedies, Japan was praised for limiting the disaster’s impact. Thanks to quake-resilient buildings, long-term disaster preparedness and a rapid emergency response
