What are rare earth metals? And why are they so important?

Rare earth metals are crucial to the energy transition. They are used in a range of essential technologies from wind turbines and electric vehicle batteries to semiconductors and LED lighting. There are 17 rare earth metals but despite the name, most of them are not actually that rare.
