Scientists Have Built a Football-Playing Robot

Its name is ARTEMIS which stands for Advanced Robotic Technology for Enhanced Mobility and Improved Stability. It’s 1.4 metres tall and it’s being developed at the University of California, Los Angeles. It will compete at RoboCup 2023 in Bordeaux, an international autonomous soccer competition. ARTEMIS’s major innovation is its actuators, the part of the robot that produces movement. They’re springy like human muscles, rather than rigid, and controlled by electricity, not hydraulics. This makes them quieter and less leak-prone. The same technology is being used to develop firefighting and disaster-relief robots.
