Sheep Are Replacing Pesticides in Pompeii

Showing how sustainable agriculture can help cut back on chemicals. 150 sheep have been set loose in an unexcavated area north of the main tourist site. The sheep graze on surrounding vegetation to prevent plants from damaging the ancient site as they grow. The initiative cuts back on lawnmowers and chemical weedkillers. Saving money and preserving the environment. It also provides a glimpse of how Pompeii might have looked during its first century heyday when it was dotted with woods, orchards and grazing animals.
