These 3D-printed Clay Reefs Can Heal Restore Coral

They’re made from natural materials in a zero-waste process. A 3D printer moves across a bed of dry clay sand mix depositing water, which activates the clay binder and makes it solid. The printer spreads a new layer of dry mix on top, executing a slightly new pattern. Over time, the layers develop into complex organic shapes which imitate those found in nature. Then, live coral communities are introduced which colonize the enclaves to form a living reef.
