Turning trash into treasure with circular sanitation: Sanergy

A Kenyan company applies a 3-pronged circular sanitation approach to waste disposal. They install clean, hygienic ‘Fresh Life’ Toilets in urban slums and remove the waste.

In the urban slums of Kenya, a company called The Sanergy Collaborative is revolutionizing waste management and sanitation services.

Through their innovative circular economy approach, Sanergy is not only improving the lives of slum dwellers but also creating valuable resources from waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or pollute the water bodies.

Circular sanitation: Solution to urban waste

The Sanergy Collaborative employs a three-pronged approach to waste disposal, sanitation, and resource recovery, starting with the installation of clean and hygienic "Fresh Life" toilets in urban slums.

These toilets collect waste, which is then removed through a community collection service that also gathers organic waste from across the city.

This waste is subsequently transformed into valuable resources, including biogas, a clean and renewable energy source, nutrient-rich fertilizer for enhanced agricultural productivity, and high-quality protein for animal feed.

Addressing global sanitation challenges

Sanergy's work is particularly relevant in addressing the global sanitation crisis. Worldwide, 1.7 billion people still lack basic sanitation services, and improper waste disposal poses a significant threat to public health and the environment. Sanergy's innovative model offers a promising solution to these challenges.
