UNESCO World Heritage sites harbour 20% of global biodiversity
There are 1,157 UNESCO World Heritage sites globally. Ranging from Machu Picchu in Peru to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. A World Heritage site is an area with special legal protection due to its cultural, historical or ecological importance. Together, the sites shelter 75,000 species of plants, including trees and 30,000 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. Including 20,000 that are endangered.
