Political scientist with extensive experience in conflict and post-conflict contexts. Director of Humanitarian Programmes at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). Prior to joining ODI, led UNDP Sudan's Peace Building Unit, brokered and managed a high-profile post-conflict response in the Nuba Mountains and was a resource person and an observer at the IGAD Sudan peace process. She holds a PhD in Politics and has lectured at the University of Dar es Salaam. Has written extensively on Sudan and South Sudan and is a recognised public speaker and media commentator on Sudan, South Sudan and humanitarian issues. Managing Editor of Disasters Journal and Vice-Chair of the Global Agenda Council on Risk and Resilience of the World Economic Forum. She is also the Chair of the Board of IRIN News, a Trustee of SOS Sahel and serves on a range of advisory boards, including the Refugees Studies Centre and the UN Association of the UK.
