Brian P. Schmidt is Professor of Astronomy at the Australian National University, where he previously served as Vice-Chancellor and President from 2016 to 2023. His research focuses on observational cosmology, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts and astronomical surveys. He led the High-Z Supernova Search Team, whose observations of distant Type Ia supernovae provided evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. He shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe through observations of distant supernovae.
