The next climate breakthrough may come from materials too small to see
The true bottleneck to climate innovation is the inadequacy of materials at system interfaces, requiring further materials innovation and faster discovery.
Michael Liu is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pheno Innovations, an AI-driven advanced materials company working to accelerate the discovery and commercialization of next-generation materials. Under his leadership, Pheno has raised more than RMB 100 million in funding and built a team of over 50 scientists, engineers and operators developing molecular-scale interface materials for clean energy, semiconductors, electronics and other emerging industries.
Pheno combines artificial intelligence, high-throughput experimentation and materials engineering to create a closed-loop discovery platform that can shorten the materials development cycle from years to months. The company’s work began in solar materials and has expanded into broader advanced materials applications, with the aim of building core infrastructure for faster, more scalable materials innovation.
Michael graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in business management and previously worked at one of China’s leading artificial intelligence technology companies. His work focuses on connecting scientific discovery, industrial application and venture building to help transform advanced materials from laboratory concepts into industry-ready solutions.
