What small islands reveal about a blind spot in resilience thinking
Much larger nations can learn from small islands in the Caribbean, where tourism-dependent economies collapsed almost overnight when COVID-19 hit.
Rendell de Kort is a PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam studying economic resilience in small island developing states. He holds an MSc in Development Economics from the University of Manchester and has worked as a consultant for the World Bank on disaster risk financing in the Caribbean. He is the founder of Cornerstone Economics, a purpose-driven economic consultancy, and a researcher at the University of Aruba. His book The Conch Paradox: Rethinking Resilience will be published in March 2026.
