What is ‘AI slop’?

Are your social media feeds becoming clogged with low-quality, low-effort, AI-generated content? ‘AI slop’, as it’s called, is spreading across the internet – from fictitious personal stories to deepfake images of politicians, created not only for comedic effect but to influence voters and the broader public. This could have serious consequences for democracy, online platforms and even AI itself. The World Economic Forum has published a report, Rethinking Media Literacy: A New Ecosystem Model for Information Integrity, which offers guidance on empowering people to access, analyse, evaluate and responsibly produce media content.
