New York City is turning food scraps into ‘black gold’ to fight climate change

New York City’s food waste collection programme transforms food scraps into a dark, nutrient-rich compost known as ‘black gold’. In its first year of operation, the programme gave away 2,700 tonnes of this compost to New York residents – helping to curb greenhouse gas emissions while building a more climate-resilient metropolis in the process. Here’s how it works.
