Ibrahim Thiaw leads the UN convention fighting ‘desertification’, the process by which fertile land becomes barren due to either climatic conditions or human activities. Those human activities include deforestation, poor agricultural practices, overgrazing, urban expansion and industrial activities such as mining, with the world needing to produce up to 70% more food by 2050. A change of direction is a matter of priority.
