These young Ugandans are becoming urban farmers in impoverished areas

Kamwokya is one of Kampala’s poorest districts, where many residents live on less than $1 a day. In 2024, an NGO set up an urban farm in the middle of the district. As well as being a source of fresh produce for the community, it’s become a training ground for young people: 800 have now passed through its doors, learning skills that allow them to turn tight spaces, compounds and containers into flourishing vertical gardens and urban farms. On top of providing food for their families, the young people can take any produce they don’t eat to market, generating an extra source of income. Farmworkers are one of the jobs expected to grow most in the next 5 years, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025.
