Women Talk Gender Gap: Maria Mexi

This senior advisor explains why we all need to care about the care economy.

Globally, women do three times more domestic work and unpaid care work than men. This represents something like 12.5 billion hours of unpaid care work every single day. This amount corresponds to a contribution to the global economy of around $11 trillion a year, which is actually three times more than the size of the global tech industry.

Due to changing demographics, population growth, population ageing, and growing demand for elder care and child care, it is expected that the care sector will generate 300 million jobs, new jobs, by 2035.

But to me, it's very important that we also try to understand the normative reasons why we really need to care about the care economy. Addressing the care gap and closing the gender gap is an issue of contributive justice. It's basically about recognizing and valuing what every single person contributes to the common good.
