This start-up uses 'track and trace' to keep plastic out of the ocean

This video is part of: Centre for Nature and Climate

CleanHub has created a circular solution for plastic pollution in developing countries. Its AI-powered platform allows waste collectors to measure, sort and track plastic waste, ensuring it doesn’t reach the ocean. Any plastic that can be recycled is sold on, while the rest is used as alternative fuel in cement production, replacing coal and gas.

CleanHub is pioneering a track-and-trace model to tackle ocean-bound plastic pollution. Its AI-driven system monitors and manages plastic waste collection in developing countries, where formal waste services are often lacking.

From QR scans to AI-powered sorting

Plastic collectors register each bag using QR codes and photos, allowing CleanHub’s platform to analyze the volume and density of waste. At sorting plants, recyclables are sold, and the rest is used as alternative fuel, replacing coal and gas.

Scaling up impact in India

CleanHub’s newest center in Kerala aims to recover 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually. With advanced monitoring technology, it serves as a model for efficient, scalable operations in underserved regions.

Turning waste into economic opportunity

With over 16,000 tonnes of plastic recovered so far, CleanHub is not only reducing pollution but also creating jobs and reclaiming valuable materials—resources worth up to $120 billion globally.
