In Delhi, climate change is causing informal workers to lose work. This insurance scheme pays them

‘When the heat is extreme, sometimes I can’t bear it, so I only work half a day and go home. Then I have to manage money.’ Millions of informal workers in Delhi are forced to down tools when the city’s #heat or fumes swell to unbearable levels. Without sick pay or formalised contracts, they have no choice but to go without wages, making it more difficult to meet their family’s basic needs. But a new insurance pilot is paying out whenever temperatures or pollution reach unsafe levels - and insured workers are already seeing the benefits. By 2050, climate change could wipe $12.5 trillion off the global economy and result in additional healthcare costs of up to $1.1 trillion.
