How much energy is needed to power your ChatGPT conversation?

This video is part of: Centre for AI Excellence and Centre for Energy and Materials

AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGPT, Deepseek and Gemini are changing how we work. However, each ChatGPT query uses around 10 times more electricity than a Google search, enough to power a lightbulb for a few minutes, according to ChatGPT itself. AI uses a lot of computational power to process and analyse data and this is doubling every 100 days, say experts. This is driving an expansion in data centre development globally and potentially, an increase in CO2 emissions.
