How the Great Blue Wall Initiative Can Help Protect the Ocean

The Great Blue Wall Initiative will create a series of connected conservation zones that will protect 30% of the Western Indian Ocean by 2030. The zones will create limits on overfishing and development. Conserving vital ecosystems from mangroves to coral reefs and allowing marine species to flourish. Not only is this good news for global biodiversity and ocean health, but it will also safeguard the livelihoods of local communities that depend on fish stocks. The Great Blue Wall Initiative stands to benefit 70 million people in the Western Indian Ocean alone By developing a regenerative blue economy that will lead to millions of jobs. Kenya, Tanzania, and other Western Indian Ocean nations are spearheading the Africa-led project, which the United Nations, IUCN, and many countries outside the region have endorsed.
