Methanol is widely used as a shipping fuel and a feedstock for the chemical industry, but its production is highly carbon-intensive. Producing one tonne of conventional methanol can emit up to 1.5 tonnes of CO2. While green methanol can cut these emissions by over 90%, its high production cost has slowed adoption.
German start-up ICODOS has developed a fully integrated green methanol production process that uses 99% of waste CO2 from any point source. This approach reduces energy consumption by over 30% compared to conventional methods, making green methanol more affordable.
ICODOS has designed its production system to be entirely modular, further lowering costs through economies of scale and faster plant development. This innovation could transform the green methanol market and make sustainable methanol a viable option for industries.
ICODOS was named a winner of the Carbon Capture and Utilization Challenge, organized by UpLink and the World Economic Forum’s Resource Systems and Resilience programme, in partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Do you have an innovative idea for capturing or reusing industrial CO2?
