This is what happens when you recycle your phone

The smartphone in your hand contains dozens of different precious minerals and rare earth metals - and up to 95% of them can be recovered once your phone reaches the end of its life. But how exactly do phones get recycled? In 2024, Australian recycling scheme Mobile Muster recovered materials worth $2.5 million from 109 tonnes of old phones. MobileMuster features in Nature Positive: Role of the Technology Sector, a report by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, which analyses the tech sector’s dependencies and impacts on nature, from massive water use to rising energy demand and e-waste.
