The Consumer Industry Community Governors have identified three strategic pillars to guide industry transformation while ensuring positive outcome for business and society:
1. Well-being: By 2050, a global population of 9.7 billion will need 70% more food than is consumed today. The Forum’s System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Food Security and Agriculture explores ways to feed this expanded population nutritiously and sustainably through improvements to the global food system. This includes:
– Advancing 20 multistakeholder, country-led partnerships catalysed by the New Vision for Agriculture (NVA) initiative
– The Human-Centric Health project explores the industry’s role in public-private cooperation for preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
2. Resource sustainability: The industry faces the challenge of how to achieve inclusive economic growth while combating climate change and other natural resource challenges. The Forum’s System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security responds through initiatives including the:
– CEO Climate Leaders and Friends of Climate Action, two public-private networks shaping the global climate agenda following the Paris Agreement
– Tropical Forest Alliance 2020, which supports commitments to reduce the tropical deforestation associated with sourcing forest-risk commodities (soy, paper and pulp, palm oil, beef) by 2020
– Circular Economy, which is creating regional, national and sub-national public-private networks to help governments develop replicable strategies and prototype transformations at speed and scale, to decouple economic growth from resource use
– Global Water Initiative, which supports large-scale public-private partnerships, including the UN/World Bank convened High Level Panel on Water, 2030 Water Resources Group and Urban Water Alliance
3. Technological disruption: Technological disruption has the potential to enhance consumption models to brings sustainable benefit to business and society. The Forum’s System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Consumptionexplores this potential, for example via:
– Shaping the Future of Retail, which is deepening understanding of how the concept of retail and the way people shop will evolve over the next decade
Members of the Consumer Industry community are also involved in the System Initiatives on Shaping the Future of Education, Gender and Work, and Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society. Select Forum Partners are engaging with these initiatives to bring insights back to the industry.
