In the US, wind and solar power are now generating more electricity than coal

In 2024, wind and solar provided 17% of the country’s energy mix, putting them above coal for the first time, which provided just 15%, an all-time low. Solar is the fastest-growing energy source in the US. It grew by 27% in 2024 while wind grew by 7%. US coal use had already been in steady decline but as recently as 2017, it still generated twice as much power as wind and solar. However, the nation’s gas generation still continues to grow.
