How ‘hydroclimate whiplash’ is increasing the risk of wildfires

January’s wildfires in Los Angeles were among the worst in California’s history. Experts say their ferocity has been fuelled in part by ‘hydroclimate whiplash’, a climate change-driven phenomenon that is growing in intensity. The term describes the swing between two weather extremes, extremely wet weather and dangerously dry conditions.
