Increasing volatility in market returns, interest rates and commodity prices see investors seeking global, impartial and future-oriented guidanceThis community is a high-level group of peers dedicated to ensuring the sustinability of their industry and society. Industry AgendaThe Investors Industries Governors define the industry agenda. The group, comprising chief executives and chairs from partner organizations, closely align the agenda with related System Initiatives. The Governors identified four priorities for 2018: Long-term thinking and investment, responsible leadership, investors as a catalyst for economic growth and innovation, and infrastructure investment. The Forum is addressing these priorities through a number of projects and activities: 1. Long-term thinking and investment A long-term investment horizon can boost returns for investors, and potentially improve welfare for all of society. To realize this potential, it is important to align incentives and identify non-traditional risks across the investment value chain. Forum activities in this area include: The System Initiative on Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development, which aims to close the $1 trillion annual infrastructure financing shortfall, help companies and their investors find a longer-term outlook, scale-up impact investing strategies that combine financial and social returns, and improve the efficiency of long-term social contracts such as retirement systems. Together, these initiatives can contribute to a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable world. The Retirement Investment Systems Reform project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development, aims to avoid drastic pension shortfalls in the future. It does this by:

  • Engaging stakeholders to develop best practice case studies and understand the major challenges facing different retirement systems

  • Exploring reforms that could strengthen retirement systems

The Global Future Council on Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development focuses on:

  • Access to finance for modernizing infrastructure

  • Identifying best practices in operation and maintenance

  • Addressing the lack of knowledge and collaboration in global infrastructure delivery

  • Correcting misaligned incentives in infrastructure investment

  • Improving clarity on infrastructure project life-cycles

  • Understanding the global risk landscape

2. Responsible leadershipInvestors are a driving force behind the financial system, and therefore powerful leaders of change in the companies they run and invest in. Forum activities in this area include: The Diversity in Private Equity initiative is a completed project that continues to promote dialogue about diversity and inclusion in the industry. The Initiative for Responsive and Responsible Leadership recognizes that corporations and investors are influential actors in society, with significant potential to improve the state of the world. The initiative promotes a new Compact, which helps corporations, investors and asset managers create corporate governance frameworks that focus on the long-term sustainability of business and the long-term goals of society.3. Investors as a catalyst for economic growth and innovationInvestors can be catalysts for positive economic growth and innovation through effective investment frameworks. As the economic and social impact of lower commodity prices, demographic shifts and climate change become more apparent, the need for innovative and sustainable growth solutions continues to grow. Forum activities in this area include: The Sovereign Wealth Funds and Strategic Investment project, launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018, aims to unite a group of leading strategic investors and supporting institutions to identify how to transform commodity wealth and legacy assets into sustainable development. The Shaping the Future of Sustainable and Impact Investing project, which forms part of the System Initiative on Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development, aims to solve difficult socioeconomic problems and promote a long-term investment mindset. It does this by:

  • Convening the public and private sectors, and civil society to explore partnerships

  • Sharing best practice and case studies

  • Applying the Forum’s Impact Investing Toolkit to new themes

4. Infrastructure investmentFinancing and developing infrastructure will be a crucial focus for the Investors industry in coming years as industrialized economies make badly needed upgrades to existing infrastructure, and emerging economies fuel growth with new projects. Forum activities in this area include: The Sustainable Development Investment Partnership (SDIP), which forms part of the System Initiative on Long-Term Investing, Infrastructure and Development, is looking to secure $100 billion in investment over five years and unlock private financing for developing countries. It does this by:

  • Facilitating blended finance for sustainable infrastructure

  • Developing regional hubs that will accelerate regional solutions

  • Expanding SDIP membership with new institutional investors and other sources of new financing
